Melatonin (MT) is one of the hormones secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin belongs to the class of indole heterocyclic compounds, and its chemical name is N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, also known as pineal hormone, melatonin, and melatonin.
After melatonin is synthesized, it is stored in the pineal gland, and the sympathetic nerve excitation controls the pineal cells to release melatonin. The synthesis of melatonin in mammals is controlled by the nervous system, and the path of this nervous system is roughly as follows: it originates from the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and directly or indirectly projects to the preganglionic sympathetic neurons of the first thoracic segment of the spinal cord. Then, through the projection of the postganglionic sympathetic neurons of the superior cervical ganglion, the nerve fibers of the pyramidal nerves are formed to reach the pineal gland to regulate the synthesis of melatonin.
The secretion of melatonin has a clear circadian rhythm, with secretion suppressed during the day and active at night. Melatonin can inhibit the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis, reduce the levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, gonadotropin, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and can directly act on the gonads to reduce the levels of androgens, estrogens and progesterone.
In addition, MT has strong neuroendocrine immunomodulatory activity and free radical scavenging antioxidant ability, and is ultimately metabolized in the liver. Damage to liver cells can affect the level of MT in the body. Although most people's endogenous melatonin can meet their physiological needs, some people may lack the ability to produce appropriate melatonin. At this time, exogenous melatonin supplementation is a relatively safe strategy.
