Ammonium carbonate is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula (NH4)2SO4, colorless crystals or white particles, and no odor. Crystalline powder, the aqueous solution is acidic. It is hygroscopic and solidifies into blocks after absorbing moisture. It decomposes above 280°C. Solubility in water: 70.6g at 0°C, 103.8g at 100°C. The pH of 0.1mol/L aqueous solution is 5.5. Relative density 1.77. Refractive index 1.521. Ammonium carbonate is mainly used as a fertilizer and is suitable for various soils and crops. It can also be used in textiles, leather, medicine, etc.

Uses
An excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soils and crops, can make branches and leaves grow vigorously, improve fruit quality and yield, and enhance the resistance of crops to disasters. It can be used as base fertilizer, topdressing and seed fertilizer. It can react with salt to produce ammonium chloride, react with aluminum sulfate to produce ammonium alum, and make refractory materials with boric acid. Adding it to the electroplating solution can increase conductivity. It is also a catalyst for food color, a nitrogen source for culturing yeast in fresh yeast production, an auxiliary dye for acid dyeing, and a leather deashing agent. In addition, it is also used in beer brewing, chemical reagents and battery production. Another important function is to mine rare earths. Ammonium carbonate is used as a raw material for mining. The rare earth elements in the ore are exchanged in the form of ion exchange. The leaching liquid is collected, impurities are removed, precipitated, pressed, and burned to form rare earth ore. About 5 tons of Ammonium carbonate are required for each ton of rare earth ore produced.
It also has many biological uses. It is mostly used in protein purification technology. Because Ammonium carbonate is an inert substance, it is not easy to react with other biologically active substances. It can protect protein activity to the greatest extent during the purification process. In addition, Ammonium carbonate has excellent solubility and can form a high-salt environment to prepare for protein precipitation and subsequent high-salt purification. There is a big difference in the solubility of Ammonium carbonate at 0ºC and at room temperature 25ºC. The following is the molar concentration of Ammonium carbonate at different saturations at two temperatures.
