Properties
White amorphous powder. There are three variants of titanium dioxide in nature: rutile is tetragonal crystals; anatase is tetragonal crystals; and brookite is orthorhombic crystals. It is yellow when slightly heated and brown when strongly heated. It is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid or dilute sulfuric acid and organic solvents, soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and slightly soluble in alkali and hot nitric acid. It can only be dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid after long-term boiling. It reacts with molten sodium hydroxide to form titanate. At high temperatures, it can be reduced to low-valent titanium compounds by hydrogen, carbon, metallic sodium, etc., and reacts with carbon disulfide to form titanium disulfide. The refractive index of titanium dioxide is the largest among white pigments, with rutile type being 8.70 and anatase type being 2.55. Since both anatase and brookite titanium dioxide will transform into rutile type at high temperatures, the melting point and boiling point of brookite and anatase titanium dioxide are actually non-existent. Only rutile titanium dioxide has a melting point and boiling point. The melting point of rutile titanium dioxide is 1850°C, the melting point in air is (1830±15)°C, and the melting point in oxygen-rich is 1879°C. The melting point is related to the purity of titanium dioxide. The boiling point of rutile titanium dioxide is (3200±300)K. At this high temperature, titanium dioxide is slightly volatile
Uses
Used as spectral analysis reagents, preparation of high-purity titanium salts, pigments, polyethylene colorants, and abrasives. Also used in the pharmaceutical industry, capacitor dielectrics, high-temperature alloys, and the manufacture of high-temperature titanium sponges.
Used in the production of titanium dioxide, titanium sponges, titanium alloys, artificial rutile, titanium tetrachloride, titanium oxysulfate, potassium fluorotitanate, aluminum titanium chloride, etc. Titanium dioxide can be used to make high-grade white paint, white rubber, synthetic fibers, coatings, welding rods, and light-reducing agents for artificial silk, fillers for plastics and high-grade paper, and is also used in telecommunications equipment, metallurgy, printing, dyeing, enamel and other departments. Rutile is also the main mineral raw material for refining titanium. Titanium and its alloys have excellent properties such as high strength, low density, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, and non-toxicity, and have special functions such as gas absorption and superconductivity. Therefore, they are widely used in aviation, chemical industry, light industry, navigation, medical treatment, national defense, and marine resource development. More than 90% of the world's titanium minerals are used to produce titanium dioxide white pigments, and this product is increasingly used in paint, rubber, plastic, papermaking and other industries.
