Potassium aluminum sulfate is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula KAl(SO4)2, colorless crystals or powder. It is odorless, slightly sweet and astringent, and has astringent properties. It loses crystal water in dry air and dissolves in humid air. It is easily soluble in glycerin and soluble in water. Its aqueous solution is acidic and precipitates aluminum hydroxide colloid after hydrolysis. It is insoluble in alcohol and acetone. It loses 9 molecules of water when sulfuric acid is dried at 60-65ºC, and completely loses 12 crystal waters at 200ºC. It decomposes sulfur trioxide at higher temperatures.
It is used as a sizing agent in the papermaking industry and is used in combination with rosin emulsion for paper sizing to improve the water resistance of paper. It is used as a preservative, astringent and hemostatic agent in the pharmaceutical industry. A certain concentration of aqueous solution can be used to prevent rice dermatitis. It is used as a mordant, retarder and resist in the printing and dyeing industry. It is also used as a raw material for the production of other aluminum salts and in the manufacture of matches, coatings, etc. In analytical chemistry, it is used as a chemical reagent for the determination of iron, manganese, antimony, and aluminum, as well as a hardener for bacterial staining.
