Sodium thiosulfate, with the chemical formula of Na2S2O3, is also known as sodium hyposulfite, sodium bisulfite, and sodium thiosulfate. It is a colorless or white crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 158.11 (anhydrous). It is easily soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, and has reducing properties. It is a common thiosulfate. It can obtain 5 crystal waters to become colorless monoclinic crystals, that is, sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate, with a molecular weight of 248.18.
Sodium thiosulfate is one of the essential drugs announced by the World Health Organization for specific detoxification. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of sodium thiosulfate to prevent hearing loss caused by cisplatin chemotherapy in pediatric patients with local non-metastatic solid tumors.
In addition, sodium thiosulfate is widely used in sewage treatment, analytical chemistry, and metal mineral treatment. It is used as a fixer in the processing of photographic films and as a reducing agent for dichromate in tanning leather. It can also be used as a mordant, a neutralizer for nitrogen-containing tail gas, a bleaching agent for straw and wool, and a dechlorinating agent for pulp bleaching. It is also used in the manufacture of tetraethyl lead, dye intermediates, etc. and in the extraction of silver from ores.
