High impact polystyrene is a white opaque bead or granular thermoplastic resin with high toughness and impact resistance, and its impact strength is more than 7 times that of general-purpose polystyrene. It maintains the excellent coloring, processing, chemical, and electrical properties of general polystyrene, but its tensile strength, hardness, light transmittance, light resistance, and thermal stability have decreased compared to general grade polystyrene. HIPS has different grades, and by controlling the molecular weight of the resin and the amount of additives, the melt flow rate can be adjusted to produce products with good flowability; If a small amount of methyl styrene is added to the monomer, the thermal deformation temperature of the product can be increased; By controlling the particle size and shape of rubber, high gloss HIPS can be produced. Refrigerator liners and oil containing food packaging are major application areas of HIPS. However, halogenated hydrocarbons and unsaturated oils can cause HIPS to quickly crack and lose strength. Therefore, environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) is one of the important properties of HIPS. In industry, the crack morphology of HIPS is mainly changed by regulating the size of encapsulated rubber particles, the content of elastomers, the volume of rubber phases, the type of toughening agent, and the molecular weight of the parent resin to obtain HIPS that is resistant to environmental stress cracking.
