Benzyl alcohol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H8O and the structural formula C6H5CH2OH. It is one of the simplest aromatic alcohols and can be regarded as methanol substituted with phenyl. In nature, most of them exist in essential oils in the form of esters. For example, jasmine oil, hyacinth oil and Peruvian balsam all contain this ingredient.
Benzyl alcohol is an extremely useful fixative and an indispensable fragrance for the preparation of jasmine, moonflower, ylang-ylang and other flavors. It is used to prepare soaps and daily cosmetic flavors. However, benzyl alcohol can be naturally oxidized slowly, and part of it will produce benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, so that the commercial products often have an almond flavor, so it is not suitable for long-term storage. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the production of industrial chemicals. It is used as a solvent for coatings; photographic developers; polyvinyl chloride stabilizers; medicines; synthetic resin solvents; solvents for vitamin B injections; preservatives for ointments or liquid medicines. It can be used as a desiccant for nylon filaments; fibers and plastic films, dyes; cellulose esters; solvents for casein, and an intermediate for the preparation of benzyl esters or ethers. At the same time, it is widely used in pen making (ballpoint pen oil); paint solvent, etc.
Benzyl alcohol is a limited preservative in cosmetic components, with a maximum dosage of 1%.
GB 2760-1996 stipulates that it is a edible flavoring temporarily allowed for use. It is also a fixative and oil solvent. As a spice, it is mainly used to prepare berry, nut and other flavors. It is used to prepare floral oils and medicines, and is also used as a solvent and fixative for spices; it is used as a solvent, plasticizer, preservative, and in the manufacture of spices, soaps, medicines, dyes, etc.
