Silicon dioxide is a colorless transparent crystal or amorphous powder, odorless. The melting points are 1710 ºC (quartzite) and 1670 ºC (lepisite); The boiling point is 2230 ºC. Almost insoluble in water and ordinary acid, soluble in hydrofluoric acid to generate silicon fluoride gas, slowly reacting with hot concentrated phosphoric acid. Amorphous powder can interact with alkali. Stable physical and chemical properties, easy to form, inherently inert, layered melt, low coefficient of expansion when heated.
