Soluble in hot sulfurous acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, insoluble in water, ethanol, general acid, and caustic alkali solutions. Not flammable. Toxic sulfide smoke is produced by high thermal decomposition.

Barite is the most common sulfate mineral rich in barium. In the rhombohedral system, crystals are mostly in the form of plates or short columns, and are generally produced in dense block, plate, or column shapes. Crystals are colorless and transparent, generally appearing in white, grayish white, gray, light yellow, light red, light blue, brown, and other colors. Glass luster, pearl luster on the fracture surface, white stripe marks. Density is 4.3-4.7g/cm3, hardness is 3-3.5. It is brittle and has a yellow green flame reaction. Insoluble in water and acid, chemically stable, non-magnetic and non-toxic, and capable of absorbing X-rays and gamma rays. Barite is mainly produced in sedimentary layered deposits and low-temperature hydrothermal veins, often coexisting with quartz, dolomite, calcite, fluorite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and other minerals.
