Elemental boron is black or dark brown powder, melting point 2076ºC. Boiling point 3927ºC. Elemental boron has a variety of allotropes, amorphous boron is brown powder, crystal boron is gray-black. Crystalline boron is relatively inert, while amorphous boron is more active. The hardness of elemental boron is similar to diamond and has a high resistance, but its conductivity increases with the increase of temperature, and it is a good conductor at high temperature. There are 14 isotopes of boron, of which only two are stable. Natural boron consists of two stable isotopes, 10B (mass 10.0129a.u.) and 11B (mass 11.00931a.u.), with relative abundations of 19.78% and 80.22%, respectively. [10]
It is a weak conductor at room temperature. At high temperatures, it is a good conductor. It occurs in nature mainly in the form of boric acid and borate.
Crystal structure
There are many variants of crystalline elemental boron, all of which use the B12 icosahedron as their basic structural unit. The icosahedron consists of 12 B atoms, and the 20 edges of an equilateral triangle intersect to form 30 edges and 12 angular tops, each of which is occupied by a B atom.
Because the B12 icosahedrons are connected in different ways, the bonds are different, and the types of boron crystals formed are also different. One of the most common is alpha-rhomboid boron.
α-rhomboid boron is a layered structure composed of B12 units, and the α-rhomboid boron crystal has both the ordinary σ bond and the three-center two-electron bond. The bonding electrons of many B atoms are delocalized to a considerable extent, and such crystals are atomic crystals, so the crystalline elemental boron is hard, has a high melting point, and is chemically inactive.
In the α-rhombohedral boron lattice, each icosahedron is connected to the six adjacent icosahedrons in the same plane by a three-centered two-electron bond with six B atoms at the lower back (where the dashed triangle represents a three-centered two-electron bond with a bond distance of 203pm). This layer is composed of icosahedral layer, the layer is bonded by the icosahedral layer of 3 B atoms above and below the icosahedron with 6 normal B-B covalent bonds (i.e., two center two electron bonds, bond length 171pm) connected to the upper and lower layers of 6 nearby icosahedrons, 3 in the upper layer and 3 in the lower layer.
