Ferroferric oxide is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula Fe3O4. It is a black crystal with magnetic properties, so it is also called magnetic iron oxide. It cannot be regarded as "ferrous ferrate" [Fe(FeO2)2], nor can it be regarded as a mixture of ferrous oxide (FeO) and ferric oxide (Fe2O3), but it can be roughly regarded as a compound of ferrous oxide and ferric oxide (FeO·Fe2O3). This substance is insoluble in water, alkaline solution, and organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Natural ferroferric oxide is insoluble in acid solution, and it is easily oxidized to ferric oxide (Fe2O3) in the air when it is humid. It is usually used as a pigment and polishing agent, and can also be used to make recording tapes and telecommunications equipment.
Nano-level ferroferric oxide has ferromagnetism. If the particle radius is at the nanometer level, it is called ferroferric oxide magnetic particles.
